mobile network problems

If you're having problems with mobile data or phone calls.

1.) Airplane mode

Please make sure that airplane mode is turned off

iOS/iPhone

settings -> Airplane Mode -> turn off airplane mode

Android

Swipe down the display and if Airplane icon is active, please tap it and the airplane mode is being turned off.

2. no mobile network signal on a location (for example the basement of the building)

A mobile network coverage can be limited for example in the basement parts of a building. Also the network signal can be weak because operator Elisa's mobile network does not yet cover that particular area yet. Usually you can call everywhere, but for example the basement parts of the old buildings can be places which are out of mobile network coverage.

An icon, on top of the smartphone display shows what kind of network the device is connected to (ie. 3G, 4G, LTE, 5G). Next to the icon can be found a meter showing the network strength. If there is only one bar on the meter, the network strength is weak and problems might occur.

Solutions:

If you need to make a call and the signal strength is weak, please find a place where the signal is stronger, for example by moving to the ground level of the building.

Weak signal

In some cases, if the signal strength is week on a particular area, only mobile operator can help. If the problems keep on persisting, please contact operator Elisa's support who will keep track on requests and based on them, the operator plans mobile network updates. Eventually the problem might get solved.

3. high network traffic rate overloading network capacity locally

At the moment mobile data is used more than ever. It is possible that local infrastructure capacity is exceeded due lots of users.

Usually this will not affect to call quality, but more to a mobile network speed.

4. phone cannot be used outside finland

Please make sure that all the restrictions are being taken off your mobile subscrition before leaving outside Finland. By default University of Jyväskylä mobile subscriptions can be used in Finland only.

Using workphone outside Finland

Also, it is possible that on the area you're travelling to has multiple mobile service providers and automatic network search cannot find the network by operator who co-operates with University of Jyväskylä mobile operator Elisa.

In this case a manual network search can be tried.

iPhone:

Settings -> mobile data -> Network selection -> Turn off automatic -> choose an operator one by one until the right one is found

(Elisa support can tell the right operator partner, but if calling is impossible, this way is perhaps quicker).

Android:

Samsung
