Installing and connecting the VPN client, Windows

Setting up and using a VPN connection

VPN connection software allows you to connect to the university network and remotely access various services that are directly connected to the university network. For example, a VPN allows you to access network disks (e.g. U-drive) from your home computer. This guide explains how to set up and connect to a VPN connection on a Windows computer.

1. Download and install the VPN client: Cisco Secure Client

Download Cisco Secure Client from the link below by logging in with your JYU user account

Log in to the site in the same way as you would connect to a VPN connection:

If you do not yet use Duo Mobile (multi-factor authentication), you can enable it by following these instructions: Enabling Duo Mobile

After the download has finished, install the program with default settings. After the installation restart the computer if prompted to do so.

2. Using VPN connection

Start the VPN client (Cisco Secure Client). Type "vpn.jyu.fi" as the address, and then the group you want to join, for example: vpn.jyu.fi/student, and click "Connect."

Examples of groups:

Cisco Secure Client can be found Windows toolbar

Cisco Secure Client. Type address and group, example vpn.jyu.fi/student

The client will ask for your JYU username and password.

Type in your JYU username and password in the "Username" and "Password" fields.

Note! Vpn groups require use of multi-factor authentication with DUO Mobile application. Write word push into second field under Password -field. This field may read "Duo MFA Passcode or Push" or "Second Password". For detailed instructions on how to use Duo Mobile and VPN, click here: Duo Mobile and VPN

Cisco ask your credentials.

After this the VPN will be connected shortly. When the VPN connects successfully, the VPN window will drop down to the bar on the bottom right corner. For a short while you can see a confirmation that VPN has successfully connected. After this the VPN is connected and should be working.

Remember to disconnect the VPN connection when you stop working. You can do this by clicking the VPN icon on the bottom right corner and then select "Disconnect".

Find Cisco Secure Client to Windows toolbar

Click "Disconnect" if you want to stop using vpn connection.
