What and why would you use BYOD exam?

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) e-exams are exams that can be organized and taken on a student's own computer or university computers in computer labs. The examination takes place in the EXAM system, just like in the EXAM rooms. BYOD exams are divided into two different modes: restricted BYOD exam and open BYOD exam.

An open BYOD exam is an exam that the student takes, for example, on their own computer. In an open BYOD exam, the student has access to the internet as well as all the programs and files on the computer. An open BYOD exam is not conducted in the EXAM environment but can be taken at home or in university facilities. Detailed instructions regarding the facilities used at the university are provided in the following guidelines.

You can organize an open BYOD exam, for example, as a personal or general exam where the student is allowed to use materials openly.

NOTE: It is not recommended to conduct a maturity test as an open BYOD exam. The use of spell-check in Word cannot be monitored or prevented in an open personal computer exam.

A restricted BYOD exam is an exam that the student takes on a computer in a university computer lab. In a restricted BYOD exam, the student does not have access to the internet or any programs or files on the computer. This means that attachments cannot be added to the exam because the student cannot open them. A restricted BYOD exam is not conducted in the EXAM environment but is taken in university facilities. Detailed instructions regarding the facilities used at the university are provided in the following guidelines.

In a restricted BYOD exam, the student's access to computer files and the internet is restricted using the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) file.

You can organize a restricted BYOD exam, for example, as an exam conducted during a lecture.

Please inform us at least 2 weeks before the planned exam date if you intend to organize a restricted BYOD exam. Make the notification to the address etentti-support@jyu.fi.

- Preventing access to the internet, computer programs, and files.

- Using pen and paper as support during the exam.

- Using other tools, such as a calculator or other materials.
