Images in Moodle
Moodle does not have a built-in image bank. When you want to add images to Moodle, you must always upload them as image files. Turn the Edit mode on
- Click the Image button.

- Select "Browse repositories..." and locate the image you have saved.

- Provide a description (alt-text) for the image. The description should describe the content of the image, making it accessible to individuals with visual impairments using screen readers. If it's an decorative image, check the "This image is decorative only" option.

- You can find CC-licensed images through Creative Commons or Google search or directly from individual image banks such as:
- JYU image bank: images.jyu.fi
- Use the search function to find images by topic, e.g., "students," "teaching."
- Always mention the source when using images: Jyväskylä University Image Archive.

Videos and podcasts (audio) in Moodle
Video or audio files should never be uploaded directly to Moodle. They should be uploaded to the appropriate service, such as Moniviestin, from where you can link or embed the video file in Moodle.
- Teachers can order a program page for teaching purposes in Moniviestin by filling out the HelpJYU form. The program page has more features and longer storage times than a personal folder.
- Students can also make videos as learning assignments, which they upload to Moniviestin's own folder and can share the video from there with others, for example, by linking or embedding it in the Moodle discussion area.
- Remember to create subtitles for videos or text transcripts for podcasts, which are subject to the law on the provision of digital services.
Linking to a video
- You can add a video link through Add Material or Activity > URL. Copy the video's address from your browser's address bar.
- Copy the link from the address bar of Multimedia stream or another video service and paste it into the Web address material type. Save.

- Students and teachers can also add links in the Moodle text editor, for example, when the teacher is editing the course area or when students are submitting assignments, by selecting the web address button and entering the address in the window that opens.

Embedding a video on a page
- Here's an example of embedding a video from Moniviestin into Moodle.
- Under the video in Moniviestin, you'll find Share button.

- Select Embed and Copy the code. Close that pop up window.

- Go to Moodle and open the text editor at the point where you want to insert the video.
- In editor select Tools and <> Source code

- Paste the entire embed code into the Source code editor. After saving, you'll see the video embedded on the page.

Embedding videos privately
You can set a passfrase for videos, restricting viewers to those who know it. If you embed a video in Moodle, viewers are already limited to those who can access the course area. In this case, it's often better to set the video as private in Moniviestin before embedding it in Moodle. This way, students won't need to enter a password to access the embedded course area.
Normally, a media page is published for viewing in Moniviestin, and the published video can be embedded on other websites. However, if you want to hide the media page in Moniviestin but still offer it for viewing on another site, you can use the "Allow private content embedding" feature. This way, the video is visible in Moniviestin only to logged-in users who have viewing rights defined on the "Access Rights" tab. For everyone else, the video remains hidden in Moniviestin and is only visible on the page where it's embedded.
Embedding a podcast in Moodle
- Click the Share button below the video or audio file

- Select Embed and select below the code field Embed audio only and Copy the whole code.

- Go to Moodle and find the point you want to embed the audio.
- From the editor select Tools > Source code and paste the code and Save.

- Podcast player should be seen on the editor.

Embedding a video or podcast in unlisted mode
If you want to restrict a video or podcast to course students only, you should set it to unlisted mode in the Media Library. This way, it will not appear in the Media Library search results or listings, but it can be played in the Moodle course area where it is embedded. You do not need a path key for videos embedded in Moodle.
On the left side of the page, you will find the visibility setting, where you can change the setting to unlisted. Up-to-date instructions for Moniviestin: Moniviestin access rights and sharing (in Moniviestin)
