What kind of computer is suitable for study use

If you are getting a new computer for studies you should probably a laptop, with the newest available operating system, Windows 11 or Mac OS 15 (Sequoia), so your device will get updates during next few years. Sufficient processor power and memory size depend on your field of study software requirements and your personal preferences, in relation to the price level of the computers.

University of Jyväskylä provides Microsoft Office software for degree students. Some Office software are available as 'light' versions in a browser, but unfortunately phone app and browser versions of Office software are not adequate for all study tasks. Eg. thesis format requirements require locally installed Word in Windows or Mac computer.
(Or LaTeX typesetting software that is popular among those who need lots of equations for mathematics and natural sciences).

If you plan to use Linux, you should find out if you can find applications for your field of study (or suitable replacement programs) for Linux, and for which Linux distribution they are available - this may require more knowledge and experience than using Windows or Mac.

While Chromebook is a budget-priced computer, we unfortunately can not recommend it for study use.

Chromebook is suitable for users who want a laptop for similar use as a phone, but want a bigger screen and real keyboard

Many studies use software that is not available for the Chromebook operating system.
