Turnitin Draft Coach will be implemented at the University of Jyväskylä from spring 2024. You can use Turnitin Draft Coach in M365 Word, for example, before submitting an assignment, thesis or paper. A single document can be checked three times with the Draft Coach in your browser Word. 

Draft Coach provides a familiar Turnitin report that shows similarities between texts from Turnitin's extensive databases (Internet, student work, publications). The Draft Coach checks all references in the text, points out any gaps and guides you through the corrections. Draft Coach can also be used to correct grammatical errors in English texts 

Turnitin Draft Coach is available to all users with JYU M365 account. Draft Coach is only available in the browser version of M365 Word. Draft Coach is not available in the desktop version. 

Opening M365 Word and Turnitin Draft Coach

1. Open a browser such as Chrome or Edge

2. Log in to office365.jyu.fi using username@jyu.fi 

2. Authenticate with Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication MFA 

3. Select Microsoft 365 Word or if you don't see Word in the tools on the left hand side find it in the Apps

 

 

4. Create a new Word document or open a previously created document.

 

5. To Word-document tools on the top of the page Turnitin tool appears automatically after a small delay. Select then Draft Coach in the second tool row. 

 

6.On the right side of the page select Get feedback now and accept the licence agreements of Microsoft and Turnitin.

 

 

7. After selecting Continue to Draft Coach opens Turnitin Draft Coach tools. 

 

 

Draft Coach Similarity Check

The Similarity Check in Turnitin Draft Coach can be performed three times on a single document. The similarity report is only visible to the user and the document/text is not stored in the Turnitin database. Remaining similarity checks will be displayed.

The image shows one check remaining, 1/3 check left. 

1. The check is started by selecting Go to Similarity and Run Similarity Check. The Similarity Check, i.e. the run of the similarity check run, still needs to be confirmed with Confirm. 

 

2. The similarity report is generated after a short delay. You can view the similarities by source (different colours) or open the full report (View full report) in a new tab from the bottom right-hand side. After any corrections or additions, you can run the similarity check again (Run New Similarity Check).

 

In the Full report view of the similarity report, you can also filter out sources from your own view using the eye icon, for example if you have already returned the first version of your thesis for a Turnitin assignment in Moodle. 

 

 

Citations check

Draft Coach's Citations Check tool searches in an English texts for direct quotations without references. To start the check, select Go to Citations.

 

Grammar Guide 

Draft Coach's Grammar Check tool can help you with the grammar of your English text. To access the tool, select Go to Grammar > Run Grammar Check.
