Here you will find common questions and answers, problems and solutions and other tips of knowledge for troubleshooting while using Zoom.
How many participants can be in a Zoom meeting at the same time?
A normal Zoom meeting can have up to 300 participants at a time. If more participants are expected for a web lecture or webinar, please contact the Digital Services Video Support in good time in advance via the HelpJYU "Web and video conference support request" support request form. For University of Jyväskylä staff, it is possible to activate a temporary Zoom license extension if needed: the options are Large Meeting 500 (a regular Zoom meeting for up to 500 participants) or Webinar (a Zoom webinar for up to 1000 participants).
Zoom installation is interrupted by an error
You may not install new software into the computers here in the university, this is done through the Software Center. If you tried to install Zoom through anything else, the error is likely caused by lacking user privileges for installation.
The proper way is to click on the Software Center icon, then Zoom and click install. The process will be quick and Zoom will soon be ready for use.
What happens to the recording of a Zoom meeting?
When creating a recording of a Zoom meeting, visible on it will be your webcam feed, whatever is being screen shared, drawings on the whiteboard and audio through the microphone. Other functions (such as chat and polls) will not be saved.
Results of the poll weren't recorded, how do I record these for the viewer to see?
This can be done by taking a screenshot and then starting up screen sharing while displaying the image you just captured (pasting it onto an empty Paint project for example).
Another method as an example would be use the Snipping Tool found on computers with Windows 10. As you are selecting which window/program to share while using screen share on Zoom, select Snipping Tool (after opening it from your start-up menu) and then you should be able to screen share it to all those who are participating in your Zoom meeting as well as making it stick to your recording,
Where is the Zoom recording saved to?
The user may set the default location for storing recordings from the Zoom's settings. If this has not been changed, the default location is under Zoom file in Documents.
This default file is located on your network drive (the so-called U-drive), meaning you will have access to your recording from any university computer as long as you log in with your own credentials. Video files may end up fairly large, so make sure to delete them once you no longer need them to be stored there and have instead published your recordings on Moniviestin or have found other solution for storage.
How does a host open a previously created meeting in zoom?
You can find the meetings by logging in at https://jyufi.zoom.us and clicking on "Meetings" on the left. Move your mouse over the meeting you want to attend and click Start.
There is some static in the background of my meeting, how do I improve the audio quality?
Sometimes during a web conference there might be several microphones in use at the time. While this is necessary during conversations, but for longer monologues/lectures it is recommended that other participants disable/mute their own microphones until needed again. If the participant has forgotten their mic on but is not available themselves, the host of the session can manually mute other users.
The volume of my speech is low or unclear despite having a proper microphone. What might cause this?
Zoom uses the microphone that has been set default for your system, despite a possibly better microphone being available for use. Problems brew when the default is a microphone that is of lower quality or Zoom uses the integrated microphone often found in webcams despite the intent having been to use the higher quality mic.
This can be fixed by switching the default - click on the arrow located on the bottom left of the Zoom application, right next to a microphone icon. Select your mic from the drop down list that opens.
In small group work in breakout rooms, can several participants draw and write on a whiteboard at the same time?
Yes, it can. In the breakout rooms, one person starts using the whiteboard and the other participants have to click on You are viewing x´s screen toolbar View Options: Annotate

What is the difference between a Co-Host and an Alternative host?
Alternative host = a user added in advance through the meeting settings, who can open a meeting you have created if you are not present. The idea is that this alternative host can act as a "stand-in" if you are unable to be present in Zoom. However, it should be noted that the meeting is still in your name, and if you log in to another Zoom meeting at the same time, the meeting held by this alternate host will end. On the other hand, you can still join the same meeting afterwards, in which case the first person to arrive will be the host and the later person will be the co-host.
Co-host = temporary extension of access set during the meeting. As a host, you can therefore make a regular participant a co-host, i.e. an "assisting host". During the meeting person will have most of the rights of a host, although some rights such as sharing user breakouts will still be missing.
Adding an alternative host only results in an error message - what is the cause?
You can add another user as an alternative host for your meeting in advance if both of these conditions are met:
- the user's university ID is either of the "staff" or "student" type
- the user has logged in at least once with a University of Jyväskylä account at https://jyufi.zoom.us
If the university ID is correct, but the alternative host cannot be added, first check if the user has ever logged in to Zoom before. Only after the first login can the user be added as an alternative host.
Meeting recording cannot be converted to mp4 video
First, check that there is enough free space on your computer's hard drive and that your internet connection is up and running and stable. Browse to the Documents/Zoom folder on your computer, locate the save folder for that meeting and double-click the double_click_to_convert01.zoom file inside it, the conversion should now restart.
If the problem continues, see also the Zoom help pages for advice on converting your recording:
