Moodle has tools to help you create maths and science materials and tasks. A formula editor is also available for students. In the Exam activity, the teacher can either use predefined question types or create more complex Stack questions. These same guidelines also apply to JYU Online courses.

Equation editor

The equation editor can be found in all online text editors of Moodle activities or materials for use by teachers and students alike. The formula editor can be accessed via the calculator icon.

To allow students to use Moodle's formula editor in their answers, the teacher must add or change the assignment return format to Online Text.

In the Equation editor, you can add predefined special characters, operators or other mathematical formatting. Another option is to load the necessary symbols and expressions directly from TeX via the Advanced tab of the Equatioin editor.

Types of mathematical questions in the Quiz activity

• A Numerical question where answers are given in numerical form and compared with model answers.Units and margins of error may also be used.
• A Calculated question is like a numerical question, but the numbers used are chosen at random from a given set of numbers by drawing lots.
• Mathematical multiple-choice is like a multiple-choice problem, where you can add calculation formulas to both the question and the answer choices.
• A Calculated simple question. Variables can be added to the question, which are converted into random numbers based on a given cut-off when the task is shown to the student.
• STACK provides mathematical questions for the Moodle quiz. These use a computer algebra system to establish the mathematical properties of the student's responses.
