Installing and connecting the VPN client, Mac

Installing and connecting the VPN client

With the VPN connection you can connect to the JYU network, enabling remote access to services that otherwise cannot be accessed outside of the JYU network. For example, network drives (e.g. U-drive) can be accessed remotely. This guide helps you to install and use the VPN client on a Macintosh-computer.

1. Download and install the VPN client: Cisco AnyConnect

Download Cisco AnyConnect from the link below by logging in with your JYU user account, JYU password and word push or 6 digit DUO Mobile passcode in second password field.

NOTE!!! Do NOT install the client with the default settings! During the installation you will select which components of the VPN client are installed. Uncheck everything except "VPN" as shown in the image below:

2. Using the VPN connection

Start the VPN client (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client). Type "vpn.jyu.fi" as the address and click "Connect".

The client will ask for your JYU username and password. From the "Group" drop down menu select

  • student if you are a student
  • staff if you are an employee
  • affiliate in all other cases

If you use VPN group not found in drop menu, please use the group name in address: vpn.jyu.fi\groupname instead, when connecting.

Type in your JYU username and password in the "Username" and "Password" fields. The Second Password/Duo MFA Passcode or Push field is used for Duo Mobile. Type the word "push" or enter a 6-digit code from the Duo Mobile application. Click "OK" when all fields are completed.

If you don't already have Duo Mobile, you can get it with this guide:

How do i set up Duo Mobile?

After this the VPN will be connected shortly. When the VPN connects successfully, the VPN window will hide in the menu bar at the top right corner.

Remember to disconnect the VPN connection when you stop working. You can do this by clicking the VPN icon on the top right corner and then select "Disconnect".
