The article is constantly updated

Moodle 4.0 version is designed to be clearer and more user-friendly. The biggest change is in the navigation. The navigation bar on the left has been removed, and the essential navigation buttons are on the top of the site.

Dashboard and My courses are separate pages

For logged-in users Moodle shows the desktop and my courses pages. The desktop has important widgets, such as timeline that shows due dates. My courses page lists all the courses that the user has enrolled on, and the view can be filtered by in progress, future, and past courses.

The Desktop is the landing page for logged in users.

You will find your courses in My Courses tab and you can filter the view by in progress, past, and future courses.

My courses

On the left side of the course area is a menu that shows the course contents, and the right-side menu is reserved for blocks. Both menus can be hidden to focus on the main content. Grades, participants, and settings in the teacher’s view can be found in tabs under the course name.

Layout on courses is much simpler. A teacher can create the visual look for the course. The main settings and grades can be found below the course name.

There are side menus on the course area. On the left side there is course index that teachers can use to rearrange activities and resources. On the right side there is blocks section where teacher can add blocks e.g. course description or progress bar.

New features

There are some new features in the new version. For example, the activity completion is no longer a checkbox on the side of the activity, but instead there is description what needs to be done to complete the activity. The remaining time of the quiz is visible all the time on the upper right corner of the page, even when a student scrolls down the page.

The Digital services organise staff trainings and update the guides for the updated version. Please check the staff training calendar on http://henkilostokoulutuskalenteri.jyu.fi and new guides in HelpJYU portal.

We will announce about the update and timing for it later. The update will take place during the summer or Christmas break so that it will cause as little harm as possible for the teaching and learning. The update also depends on the publishing of the Moodle version. It there’s a delay the update has to be postponed to the Christmas break. Edit: Moodle upgrade on Wednesday 8th of June 2022. Moodle is out of use during the upgrade.
