How do I deal with spam and junk email?
The university's O365 Exchange environment can filter most of the spam before it reaches the computer, by default. Sometimes, however, some spam messages still get through. In this guide, we've put together a few tips on what you can do on your own computer to make it easier:
- Remove clear spam/junk messages from your inbox and you can also mark the sender as spam by right-clicking on the message -> block -> block sender. This will prevent messages from coming from the same address, but in practice spammers will try to use a different sender's address.

- If you take a closer look at the sender of the message, it may contain the corresponding sender information in case of phishing : From: Helpdesk IT JYU <kalastelijandomain123@az.com>
- In particular, the information in brackets will reveal almost all phishing messages, but not always. A generic phishing message may contain links to change your password, for example, or to pick up/drop off a package, but no one actually asks for this information via the link.
- If the problem is that certain messages are marked as "junk/spam" and they are "real" messages, you can mark them as allowed by the sender by right-clicking on the message and selecting "move" -> Inbox. You will then be notified that the mail has been moved and you can choose to never have that sender's mail go to the spam folder. Email filtering is set to a certain level at university, so sometimes even the right messages end up as spam. Regular checking of the spam folder is a necessary and important function of using email today.
