Software installations on JYUNET workstations

General information on software installations

The workstations at the University of Jyväskylä have a strict security policy. This means, that nothing may be installed on the computers, with the exception of the C:\MyTemp and U:\My Programs folders. As a rule, all installations are performed by the administrator. This is to ensure that the software is updated to the latest version as quickly as possible. If you notice that a software has not been updated to the version you need, please contact the administration.

Because of the large number of computers, installations and upgrades will be centralised. In special cases, individual installations can also be done by manual installation, but in this case the request for installation must be made well in time.

Things to consider in the request for a new software:

Notes:

Centralised software installations and updates

Centralised software installations and updates are performed on computers around the clock. It is very important that the work computers are logged off for the night, so that they can run the necessary software updates during the night. It is also very important to leave the computer on when you leave your workstation, for example, turning it off during a holiday period will cause any updates installed during the holiday to be installed when you return from holiday.

As a general rule, administration tries to schedule installations during the evening/night hours, but in certain cases (e.g. serious security vulnerabilities), software updates may have to be made during the working day. In such cases, the user's workstation will notify the update and instruct the user on any necessary action.

Visibility of software installations and updates to the user

Software installations are assisted by a system that notifies the user if open software prevents an update from being made. The system also notifies the start and completion of the installation.

The system works as follows:

1. The notification area of the taskbar (usually at the bottom right of the screen, next to the clock) will display a notification that an installation is about to start. (If you wish, you can start the installation immediately by clicking on the speech bubble and clicking "Run" in the window that appears), otherwise the installation will start when the counter runs out.

2. If one or more of the open programs prevent the installation from running, a message will be displayed asking the user to close the programs. If you are in the middle of something important, you will be given 10 minutes extra time by clicking on "Remind me later". Most of the installations are patches to fix vulnerabilities, so it is important that they are installed as quickly as possible. The installation will not proceed until you close the requested programs or log out.

3. When there are no programs blocking the installation, the installation will start. The user will see a notification of the installation in the bottom right of the screen. During the installation, the programs listed in the notification must not be opened, as they may prevent the installation from succeeding or, in the worst case, may completely break the program. If you wish, you can hide the notification by clicking on "Hide".

4. When the installation is complete, you will receive a notification at the bottom right of the screen that the installation is finished. The notification will automatically close after 10 seconds. You can then resume using your computer as normal.

5. If you have problems with the installation, contact the local support in your area.
