What are the U, W, S and N disk spaces?

All students are automatically connected to a set of network disks when they log on to the university computers (these can be found in My Computer):

You can access the disks from your computer using WinSCP (U and W drives) or through a VPN connection.

Private home (U:)   ( \\fileservices.ad.jyu.fi\homes\username )

U: drive is the user's personal home directory. Students have 25 GB of storage space, staff 1000 GB. The files appear as a U drive on all JYUNET computers and as a home directory on all Unix client computers at the university.

So you can edit the files in your home directory:

For remote access and Linux/MAC use, you can get the exact path to your home directory from your local administrator, if necessary.  The physical path of the network drive can be found on a Windows workstation connected to the university network. The path can also be found in the salasana.jyu.fi service under "home directory".

W:   ( \\karahka2.cc.jyu.fi\username )

W: drive is the user's personal web directory. It is visible to the world at http://users.jyu.fi/~username when the service is first activated by visiting the OMA- service at http://account.jyu.fi. The storage space on the disk is 500 MB. The files are visible as W on JYUNET computers and on the university's direct access computers.

The guide to making a website explains the steps to be taken.

So you can edit your files that appear on the web:

Note: The address http://users.jyu.fi/~username does not appear automatically, you must first activate the service yourself in the OMA- service at http://account.jyu.fi

Shared groups (S:) (\\fileservices.ad.jyu.fi\commonshare)

S: (shared) is a faculty or departmental shared drive. The content and existence of an S drive depends on the unit, major, etc. Only staff have access to the drive, others may have access at the request of staff. The files appear as an S-drive on JYUNET computers. Remote access is only possible via VPN.

N- drive

A network station used in the IT faculty's programming courses. The station contains sample code used in the courses as well as ready-made applications.
