Strong identification for international citizens using passport or EU/EEA personal identification card.
Approved identity documents
Identification (onboarding process) by using electronic ID is available for citizens of foreign countries with a valid passport or EU/EEA citizens using valid national ID card.
Finnish citizens are identified only using Suomi.fi electronic identification service (passport or ID card identification is not avaiable for finnish citizens).

Electronic (Signicat) identification fails using official identity documents
If the identification fails using a VALID and approved document, please start the identification process again.
In some cases, due to various reasons, successful identification can require multiple trys (5 times allowed within 5 hours) before the process is successfully completed.
Known common reasons for unsuccessful identification:
- The resolution of your camera is not sufficient for the system. Please try again with another device. Using a mobile phone is recommended.
- The lighting is not sufficient. Please try again with better lighting conditions.
- Document picture and video image comparison is not successful: you can try smiling or keeping the camera in a different position.
- Identification session (capturing the document and live video) is taking too long and exceeds the security limits for a identification event. Please start the process again. For capture make sure you have good lighting and stable hands.
- The video sequence may have been blurry due to unsteady hands. Try to keep your hands steady during the process (e.g., support the device on something while taking the video).
- The system may not have recognized you if you are wearing your glasses. Remove your glasses and try again.
- Your name or date of birth on your passport do not match with the name or date of birth you have informed as part of the application process to the University of Jyväskylä. Please contact the university at admissions@jyu.fi (degree students) or international-office@jyu.fi (exchange students and summer school students) to inform of your name and date of birth as they are stated in your passport/European identity card. After the information has been corrected in the university student register, you can start the identification process again.
Alternate ways for identification (online video and on-premise)
If the identification process fails despite trying again and taking the above-mentioned instructions into consideration, you can use one of the following options:
1. Identify at campus: Identification and account creation at Digital services Service desk
2. Manual online video identification: Start the manual identification process independently by filling out the identification form.
- Log in to the form using the following initials:
- Username: Your email (the same email you have used in the Signicat identification process)
- Password:Your registration ID (you have received your registration ID in the registration email)
- After you have successfully submitted the form, you will receive an email from the identification team containing instructions for booking a time for video identification session via Teams within the next two working days.
- Please make sure that you have your passport/ID, pencil, and a piece of paper at hand during the video meeting! Also make sure to use a supported browser (Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome) or download the Teams app for the video meeting!
