What is Groups.jyu.fi service?

General about groups.jyu.fi

The web address groups.jyu.fi is intended for the websites of communities operating under the student union (student organizations, representative councils, and student nations). The eligibility of websites published on this service is determined jointly by the university’s communication department and the student union, and they are considered on a case-by-case basis when necessary.

General

There are general guidelines for websites at the university. More detailed information about creating pages, the university’s policies regarding content, etc., can be found there. Please also read those guidelines.

User accounts

The service groups.jyu.fi is hosted on the same server as users.jyu.fi, and all IT services users have accounts to access it. In the Groups server, each user utilizes their own personal username. However, not just anyone can create their own directory under groups.jyu.fi; this must be requested from the webmaster (webmaster@jyu.fi). Before that, permission from the university’s communication department (tiedotus@jyu.fi) is required to place a site within groups.jyu.fi.

When requesting your own directory, please provide the following information:

Additional administrators for the site can also be requested (names and usernames). Based on this information, the webmaster creates the directory and a group with permissions to edit the site, adding the requested users to grant them update rights. Administrators can also be added or removed later.

Permissions in groups.jyu.fi

Unlike user.jyu.fi, in groups.jyu.fi, the ability to modify files and directories (write access) depends on the group’s permissions. This is especially relevant when there are multiple administrators for a site! Typically, the site’s contact person (=main administrator) is the owner of the pages and directories (i.e., the one who originally created them). Only the owner (or the webmaster) can directly change file and directory permissions. Therefore, it is essential that the owner (typically the person who last updated the page) ensures that the group has the necessary permissions for files and directories for website maintenance (the group must have write access to files and directories). If the owner of the files leaves the site’s maintenance group due to changes in administrators, any missing permissions must be requested from the webmaster (webmaster@jyu.fi). Once or if the group’s permissions are in order, new administrators can immediately update the pages when changes are made to the administrator group.
