Grading in different activities
Moodle activities have activity-specific settings for defining the assessment. The activities work in different ways and therefore their assessment methods differ. For example, in an Quiz it is often necessary to define several questions, which are scored and a mark is compiled from the sum of the Quiz points, whereas in an Assignment activity an essay can be assessed directly on a 0-5 scale, for example by means of an assessment matrix.
Activity-specific assessments are always enabled in the settings for the activity in question, under Grade. The assessment settings for an existing activity can be accessed by clicking on the edit mode on the course page and selecting the three dots to the right of the activity and selecting Settings tab.
In activity settings there is Grade-settings. It is very important to make grade settings before any submissions are made or any grades are given as the assessment cannot be edited after the students have completed the activity.
The type of grading
The type of grading can be None, Point (default) or Scale. If you select the type Point, you can add a maximum grade (maximum point), for example for an exam, or if you select the type Scale, you can choose the scale you want from the predefined settings, e.g. 0-5 (even numbers), pass/fail or pass/fail.
Definition of assessment in a Assignment activity
The Assignment activity is not available in JYU Online Courses.
The assessment method can be Simple direct grading, Marking Guide or Rubric. For example, when assessing essays, it is often easier to assess if you use an assessment matrix, which allows you to assess the essay from several different angles.
